Chapter Ten

My wedding day was perfect. Reliance and I drove to town with Ashley and Sadie, ostentatiously to go shopping. We didn’t say anything to Ashley until we actually got to the town hall. Once there, he balked, and it was only when Magic, Dawn, and Sham showed up that he agreed to carry on with it.

Reliance had called his brothers and Dawn and sworn them to secrecy. Everything went so fast it was a blur to me, until suddenly we were standing in front of the notary public signing the last of the papers making Reliance and I legally husband and wife.

We stepped outside and the sun was just shining away, the same as it had when we went in. Everything was the same, and yet all was different. I hugged Reliance and tossed the bouquet of hibiscus I was carrying to Sadie.

I had picked a posy of white hibiscus, just like my Mother’s wedding bouquet. I was wearing a blue dress, an antique pearl necklace that had belonged to our grandmother, a new pair of shoes, and I’d borrowed Sadie’s turquoise earrings. Reliance had his white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up and a pair of beige chinos. Sadie took our picture standing in front of the town hall, and then we all went to the Oar House to have a drink.

Then Magic suddenly started to laugh. He put his hand in his pocket and drew out a little box. “I forgot to give you this,” he said, leaning over the polished table and handing it to Reliance.

“What the...” Reliance opened the box. “It’s Gran’s ring,” he said.

“Mom always said it was for the first of her boys to get married. It’s yours now,” he said to me.

Reliance nodded. “This is your wedding ring.” He shook his head wonderingly. “To think you’d remember this. Thanks, Magic, I owe you one.”

He took the ring out of the box and slipped it on my finger. It was white gold with a square cut diamond. On either side of the diamond were two small sapphires. The whole thing sparkled and dazzled in the light. The ring was a little too big for me. I’d never worn anything of such obvious value. I was speechless. Sadie leaned over the table and looked at my hand.

“Wow!” she cried. “What a rock! Your Granny must have been quite a lady! You lucky girl!”

“It’s truly beautiful,” said Dawn softly.

“A toast!” Shamrock raised his glass. “A toast to the newly-weds, may their marriage be long, lusty, and fruitful, and may their parents not kill them tonight. Amen.”

“Tonight our parents aren’t going to see us,” said Reliance. “I’ve reserved a honeymoon suite in a swank hotel, and nobody will see us until tomorrow morning.”

“Hear, hear!” said Ashley. “Well done brother-in-law-to-be. I see you are a crafty fellow. I will add that you snore only a very little. I am looking forward to seeing you again when you come back to the USA from France.”
